3Com Corporation EtherDisk Diskette for the EtherLink/MC Adapters Diagnostic Program Instructions Summary Overview -------- The diagnostic program for the EtherLink/MC adapter is designed to make sure that the adapter is installed correctly and functioning properly in your computer. Three groups of diagnostic tests are available: - The Group 1 tests check the physical components, connectors, and circuitry of the adapter and require only that the adapter be installed in the computer. - The Group 2 tests check the adapter's ability to transmit data on the network and require that the adapter be connected to a loopback plug (coax version only) or to a network. - The Group 3 tests check the adapter's ability to correctly transmit and receive data over the network and require that the adapter be connected to a network where an echo server has been set up. NOTE: If Group 3 tests are running while the computer is connected to an active network, intermittent packet exchange failures may occur before the tests are done. These failures can be avoided by running Group 3 tests on an inactive network in which only the computer being tested and the echo server are connected. Starting the Diagnostic Program ------------------------------- The computer containing the EtherLink/MC adapter to be tested must be running DOS. If this computer is an operating server, notify all users of the server to save their work and log out from the network. The diagnostic program disrupts the normal operation of the server, and work that is not saved may be lost. The diagnostic tests do not function properly if you run them after booting your system with NetBIOS installed. Please start your computer with a standard boot diskette that does not contain a network driver. The diagnostic program can be found in the root directory on the EtherDisk diskette. Start the diagnostic program by issuing the following command: 3C523 [/C] [/S] Switches inside the brackets are optional parameters. Input any switches specific to your adapter. For example: - Use /C for continuous testing - Use /S for testing a second EtherLink/MC adapter Examples: 3C523TP 3C523TP /C 3C523TP /S 3C523TP /S /C Help Menu --------- If you need help while running the diagnostic program, press [F1]. Using the Diagnostic Program ---------------------------- The menus and forms that make up the diagnostic program will guide you through testing your EtherLink/MC adapter.
